Supporting design and implementation of very first drive-thru builders yard and warehouse
BUILT is an exciting, new, very first drive-thru builders yard and warehouse backed by the largest builders merchants group in the UK – Travis Perkins PLC.
With their then first branch due to open in Aston (Birmingham) in September 2017 with additional branches rolling out across Birmingham over the following 12 months. BUILT/ will operate an omnichannel retail model with a huge range of building supply essentials, offering stock, price and transaction level visibility and is designed to offer consistent, predictable and guaranteed services to its customers.
BUILT/ had developed a brand new operating model for servicing building supplies and management wished to engage external expertise to validate and develop warehouse/depot layouts, workflows, processes, picking regimes, MHE requirements, SOPs (standard operating procedures), WMS functionality, customer service /interaction, Health and Safety measures, yard management, traffic marshalling and general housekeeping.
BUILT/ chose the Specialist Logistics and Warehousing Consultants at Gideon Hillman Consulting to offer this external expertise, due to their wealth of warehouse knowledge and documented dedicated diligence throughout optimisation projects.

The team of Specialist Warehouse Consultants commenced the project by introducing themselves to the key personnel who provided the necessary operational and business data and analysis required to fulfil the project, whilst simultaneously reviewing the proposed processes and workflows for the BUILT/ branch.
Under the scope of this project, Gideon Hillman Consulting were required to execute a number of deliverables, of which one priority was to provide a review of and recommendations for the facility design to ensure optimised workflows and process integration within all areas including the customer service area and including goods receipt, storage, pick/pack, despatch, and any ancillary/value added work flows.
Throughout this project, the Specialist Logistics and Warehouse Consultants were responsible for reviewing further processes to obtain key information to form the basis of an informed and justified process review for BUILT/.
Further reviewed processes included but were not limited to: storage unit size requirements for all products, Health and Safety requirements, stock and inventory management requirements, goods in and put-away/stowage routines into storage areas; and growth projections for the agreed planning horizon.
By conducting this project, the Gideon Hillman Consulting team, were able to provide the results of the operational review in a presentation style report to the BUILT/ management team, showing the reviewed existing operations, highlighting key findings and recommendations for opportunities within their facility.
With the Specialist support of Gideon Hillman Consulting’s Logistics and Warehouse Consultants, BUILT/ were able to identify and prioritise the suggested warehouse layouts and workflows by ease of implementation and business benefit.
