The National Autistic Society (NAS) are the leading UK charity for autistic people (including those with Asperger syndrome) and their families.They provide information, support and pioneering services, and campaign for a better world for autistic people.
NAS are the UK’s largest provider of specialist autism services including residential homes, one-to-one support, support in the home, day-time hubs and support in further and higher education; NAS trained staff and volunteers bring passion and expertise to the lives of 100,000 people living with autism every year.
The National Autistic Society was established in 1962, as a small group of friends who were frustrated at the lack of understanding and help available for adults and children alike.With their experience, expertise and determination, NAS want to inform, inspire and motivate for lasting change; that is why their aim is to spread the understanding of autism and autism practice, that they have developed over 50 years.
NAS requested The Supply Chain Consulting Group (SCCG) to provide a feasibility study for an in-house solution, to implement and operate a fully functioning fulfilment and warehousing service for NAS, via the appointed service.
The Specialist Warehouse and Supply Chain Consultants conducted a formal and thorough exploration of the proposal for an in-house solution, in an effort to better understand the complexities and implications of the proposal, whilst simultaneously considering the financial implications alongside NAS’s current fulfilment and warehousing needs.
In order for the SCCG team to properly identify and develop optimised layouts, workflows and operational procedures, they required to review certain aspects of NAS’s current operation, including but not limited to: product lifecycle management, product flows and volumes, hours of operation and overall stock management, and growth projections for NAS’s three-year planning horizon.
The Specialist Consultants coupled their review with an assessment of anything which visibly posed as a potential constraint, this included the following aspects: inbound doors, inbound marshalling space, storage space, outbound marshalling, outbound doors and trailer/yard space. The SCCG team analysed these constraints, to provide solutions to mitigate these, to ultimately ensure the NAS facility would run at optimum performance. The SCCG team also developed an indicative cost model for fit-out and annual operational costs for NAS to gain a comprehensive understanding of projected facility cost.
Following their review of NAS’s current operations and future operational requirements, the Specialist Logistics and Warehouse Consultants were able to provide NAS with recommendations for a planned in-house facility, with regard to facility sizing, warehouse storage, and loading / unloading workspace for their current operation. Additionally, future assumptions and projections were also considered with regards to growth, additional services and potential chargeable services.
With support from the Specialist Warehouse and Logistics Consultants at The Supply Chain Consulting Group, the National Autistic Society were able to review their current operations, and assess their suitability for an in-house operation, based on their current capacities, whilst simultaneously planning for potential future growth.
