British Sugar Case Study

The Supply Chain Consulting Group Optimises Warehouse For British Sugar

British Sugar are the leading producer of sugar for the British and Irish food and beverage markets, processing around eight million tonnes of sugar beet and producing up to 1.4 million tonnes of sugar each year.

As the sole processor of the UK’s beet sugar crop, British Sugar work in partnership with their 3,500 growers and customers to deliver a world-class product that is made to the highest standards every day.

British Sugar factories operate an advanced manufacturing model that avoids waste by turning process outputs into inputs for a wide range of co-products. These co-products include aggregate, topsoil and animal feed and make the best use of all their available resources to minimise cost and operate efficiently and responsibly. Their innovative approach to manufacturing also enables them to create a range of co-products from power generation and bioethanol, to animal feed and much more.

British Sugar recognised that there was potential to optimise their current warehouse and despatch facility through improved racking configuration, potential for automated or semi-automated systems including gravity fed racking, and also the possibility to extend the building and/or separate the receipt and despatch operations (vehicle loading and un-loading).

British Sugar enlisted the experts at Logistics and Supply Chain Consultancy, The Supply Chain Consulting Group (SCCG), to advise on how best to optimise their facility design and operations. British Sugar subsequently required SCCG to manage a tender process for the supply and implementation of different conveyor design options, entrusting them to recommend suppliers capable of providing practical and sustainable solutions, to be incorporated within their current facility.

Once their initial facility optimisation project was complete, British Sugar returned to engage SCCG for expert support and direction concerning the implementation of their now chosen warehouse design plans, including facility outsourcing concerning the installation of a mechanical pallet handling conveyor, as a step to increase the capacity of their site and reduce pallet movements and operator-hours.

The Specialist Logistics and Warehouse Consultants identified and agreed a list of potential automation providers, supplying these to British Sugar, which were accounted for alongside a number of providers identified by British Sugar themselves.

Following this, British Sugar, jointly with SCCG, arranged for suppliers to visit the site in order to properly evaluate the requirements for supply and installation of a mechanical pallet handling conveyor.

The SCCG team worked with the British Sugar project team to efficiently and effectively optimise their current facility operations, alongside identifying potential suppliers for British Sugars’ subsequent requirements for supply and installation of a mechanical pallet handling conveyor.

Reviewing the final specification and providing comments and modifications prior to tendering, The Specialist Consultants at SCCG successfully assisted the British Sugar project team in optimising their existing facility, alongside constructively reviewing and evaluating their tender returns.
